Training FAQs

Who is able to attend these classes?

Due to the nature and purpose of the courses, registration and attendance are restricted to law enforcement officers/agents (local, state, federal), prosecutors, judges, or digital forensic examiners, IT specialists, and intel analysts employed by a law enforcement agency.

Do I need to have any prior experience with Tor or computers in general to attend the trainings?

No, though prior experience is helpful.

Where are the trainings held?

All trainings take place in our training room in the Joint Electronic Crimes Task Force on UA’s campus in Cyber Hall. There are multiple hotels in Tuscaloosa that offer government rates; we can provide more information on this upon request.

How do I register for the classes?

Email JECTF@ua.edu with the following information: 1) full name of each person and their agency who’d like to register, along with 2) their email addresses and 3) which of the three classes you are interested in registering for.

What if I’m interested in the class but cannot make the dates scheduled?

Keep an eye on our website for new classes, or email JECTF@ua.edu for additional information.

Do I need to bring anything with me to the training?

You will need to bring a blank USB drive with you to attend the Basics training course (more information will be given once you’ve registered for the course), but other than that, no.

How large are the classes?

Because of the hands-on nature of the classes, we restrict attendance to 15. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis, so if you know you’ll have more than one person interested in attending please send us their information as well.

Can you put on a training for my agency specifically?

Yes. If you have enough people interested in a training from your agency, please contact us at JECTF@ua.edu and we’ll set up a separate training date.

Will I receive a certificate of attendance?

Yes; students in each class will receive a certificate of attendance, and local officers in the state of Alabama can receive APOST continuing educational credit for these trainings.

Will other courses ever be developed?

Yes, as time permits. If there is a topic you’d be interested in, please email JECTF@ua.edu with your suggestions.
